The Polish
American Medical Association had another beautiful
and successful Ball on February 12th, 2005.
This marks the 55th year of this fundraising
event held for the first time at the Drake
Grand Ballroom. Every year, the Ball raises
money for the organization's Academic Fund
for local students who will attend a medical,
dental, or veterinary school in Illinois.
Scholarships are awarded between $2000 and
$5000 for students who excel academically,
participate in the Polish community, and have
high goals in their fields.
Parts of the benefits
of the Ball are allotted for other important
efforts in the Polish community. The Polish
American Medical Association has been supporting
the creation of a new Center of Polish Studies
at Loyola University and will offer funds
this year towards creating an endowed professorship
at the university. With Chicago hosting
one of the largest Polish populations outside
of Poland, it is due time for such a Center
to enhance the knowledge of Polish culture,
history and literature here in the U.S.
Barbara Miller was present and thanked the
Association for its ongoing support. Dr.
Anna Szpindor, President of the Polish American
Medical Association, also urged other organizations
to financially support this noble project.
The guest of honor
at this year’s Ball was the Consul General
of the Republic of Poland in Chicago Franciszek
Adamczyk with his wife Irena who also actively
support the future Center for Polish Studies.
Other honored guests included Marvin Brustin,
Honorary Consul of Nepal in Chicago; Dr.
Michael Higgins, President of the Illinois
Dental Society; Dr. Steven M. Malkin, President
of the Chicago Medical Society; and James
R. Tarrant, Administrative Director of the
Chicago Medical Society.
Guests and members
of the Polish American Medical Association
enjoyed a presentation by the Polonia Ensemble
Dancers and then were led by Dr. Szpindor
in a lovely Polonaise to mark the opening
of the event. The Masters of Ceremonies
were Dr. Dorothy Anasinski and Dr. Miroslaw
T. Sochanski.
Awards were presented
first to the Consul General Adamczyk for
his support of much of the charitable work
and activities of the Polish American Medial
Society. Other awards were given to Dr.
Dorothy Anasinski for her untiring work
in organizing the Dental Study Club and
Dr. Adam Szpindor for organizing and motivating
the Veterinary Section, both active circles
within the Polish American Medical Association.
Two awards went to the Sportsmen of the
Year within the
Association to Dr.
Bronislaw Orawiec who is its Vice President
and organizes the Sport Club "Bronek"
and Dr. Halina Aniol. Both are fine models
of the active lifestyles these doctors promote.
A raffle and a silent
auction with many varied items continued
through the dinner and dancing with music
by the Dance Kings.
Several pharmaceutical
firms sponsored display tables to provide
information on their newest products. They
included: Abbott Laboratories, Aventis Pharmaceuticals,
Organon Pharmaceuticals, Ortho-Mcneil Pharmaceuticals,
Pfitzer Inc., Teamm Pharmaceuticals, UCB
Pharma, Warner, Chilcott.
